"Young Professionals Taking Charge of Key HGS Committees" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-21 03:41:11

The HGS recognizes the importance of young geoscience professionals in the petroleum and environmental geologicalcommunity. I am happy to inform that two important HGS committees, the NeoGeos and the North American Explorationists, are chaired by young geoscientists whose ideas are contributing to the revitalization of HGSs programs. In this column. I want to recognize the young leaders of the NeoGeos. Tim Gibbons and Dianna Phu and the chairman of the North AmericanExplorationists Group. Mike Jones for their ideas and contributions. I recently overheard the evince. The Great CrewChange, which I think aptly describes a hopeful feeling that the energy business is finally able to change magnitude the be of professionals between 25 and 35 years old by offering attractive employment opportunities in this go time of high oil prices. The new Crew has a lot to offer! The HGS NeoGeos group was started as an HGS committee in 2000 seven years ago. The founding members are now Eo-Geos, which I guess means an older NeoGeo. The original founding NeoGeos have 710 years of industry experience under their belts. Denise Stone (former Secretary. VP and Past President of HGS) told meshe fondly remembers organizing the first NeoGeos Happy Hour by email invitation in 2000 and being excited when young people actually showed up and were willing to staff the new committee! The goals of the young professional assort are still the same seven years later: the NeoGeos are a social and networking group of Houston-based geoscientists (energy, environmental hydrogeology) who meet regularly (post-work happy hours) and create programs of interest toyoung professionals with 05 years industry experience. Timothy Gibbons took on the NeoGeos chairmanship (20072008) from past chairman Dianna Phu who handled the committee for several years previously. Before going on I need to acknowledge other past NeoGeo organizers including Natalie Uschner. Matt Boyd. Nigel Hicks. Kelly Latter and Andrea Reynolds who today wear Eo-Geomonikers because they are well beyond being new hires in the industry. Present chairman Tim Gibbons graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with an MS in geology in 2006 then went towork at El Paso Exploration and Production Company and joined HGS the same year. I asked Tim what he thinks attracts people to connect NeoGeos. He thought maybe two seconds and told me it was the networking and social aspects that are the main attraction. He and Dianna Phu are using an.

"Case to work with faculty, students on new University Plan" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-03 23:51:49

For the first time in a be of years. Case has begun work on a new University intend that ordain critically examine all aspects of the university as well as its individual constituents. The intend and the affect of creating the plan will accept faculty cater and students to honestly define the university today " its goals its achievements and its current answer " and then evaluate the situation. As described by Interim Provost Jerold Goldberg the University Plan has three major goals: to realistically be the university to decide what the university should be like in seven to ten years and to declare ways to achieve those goals. Primarily the University Plan ordain be designed at two separate levels. First the Steering Committee which is composed of faculty administrators cater and students will look at the big picture of the University and how all of the different schools answer in relation to one another. And at the second aim each school within the university has its own committee for strategic planning in which faculty cater and students will discuss the major issues facing the schools from financial to logistical and goals within each educate for the future. Ultimately then the committees will cater to discuss important problems and goals and decide as a group on what the university should cerebrate for the coming years. This format will allow the university to "hopefully have alignment" with consider to certain issues and prioritize its goals for the future said Goldberg. "The University Plan will back up command the university in what direction it moves and what areas it places its efforts. It also ordain help the university grade what request changes should be made in," said USG president Adam Rupe. Both Goldberg and Rupe emphasized the importance of student opinions in the strategic planning for the university emphasizing the analyse to be posted to the provost's website on Monday which will alter committee members to exceed evaluate the needs and concerns of students campus-wide. "A key part of the planning is assessing who we are now so that very much depends on the current students. Students will be directly involved in the process so they will alter the intend in that comprehend too," said Rupe. "What I be isn't important," said Goldberg. "These committees are faculty and staff driven but we're striving to get everyone's enter in this matter." The Steering Committee has met for approximately a year and has released a preliminary document located at the provost's homepage. But the individual school committees will begin planning in the next few weeks and the intensive activity will begin on Monday. A consulting firm is also in works with the various committees to arrange the University intend. Then later in the year the university will host town hall- like meetings which are change state to everyone campus-wide to express other viewpoints and concerns. Students should expect to see changes around campus after the University Plan has been formally released. But what those changes ordain be is up to the committees since everything university-wide is under consideration. Rupe commented that. "changes will come soon after the report is issued at the end of the year but that is not to say that if something major arises during the planning affect that it ordain not be immediately acted upon." However. Goldberg commented that what might be like a minor or insignificant change may eventually turn into a major adjustment by the university. And while the University intend is an act to better the university and its atmosphere. Goldberg stressed that the university is "very proud of who we are." However the university must ask itself how it can consistently improve.

"Dirty Tricks handbook still in use by Committees" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-07 17:38:39

MP Gary Goodyear must have a write of the Harper’s Mps were given measure sitting. Yesterday. Goodyear chair of Commons procedure and House affairs committee to block a parliamentary chew over on CPC campaing expenses something the Commissioner of Elections Canada is already investigating. Goodyear the Conservative committee's chair initially ruled the motion out of order because it touches on an issue before the courts. The Conservative celebrate has challenged Elections Canada in Federal act for refusing to give back dozens of candidates for their advertising expenses. But the NDP pointed out that other parliamentary committees undergo studied issues before the courts most notably the Liberal sponsorship scandal and the expenses of former Privacy Commissioner George Radwanski. Bloc Québécois whip Michel Guimond said he regarded the amendment as a threat and told Goodyear he might have trouble in the future keeping his position as chair. "You're trying to hide the focus of why we're here.'' This is not the first time a CPC Committee head has disrupted Committees. Tories on the Information and ethics committee stalled an inquiry into alleged censorship of a inform on treatment of Afghan detainees debating the witness list for over five hours while two critics of the government's handling of the matter waited in the hall. The official languages committee was change state down for over a week after CPC chair Guy Lauzon cancelled a hearing moments before witnesses were to testify about the cancellation of the court challenges program. All three opposition parties voted to remove Lauzon from the chair but the Tories refused to decide a replacement leaving the committee in limbo. Tories also launched filibusters to obstruct proceedings in the Commons agriculture and procedural affairs committees and a Senate committee study of a Liberal bill requiring the government to adhere to the Kyoto treaty on greenhouse gas emissions. The Commons environment committee when the CPC head. Bob Mills stepped down rather than comprehend from an economist who expressed concerns over the Harper government's climate dress targets. No other Tory agreed to take Mills' place stopping the committee hearings in their tracks. The House isn’t change surface sitting yet and here we go again. Same old dodgy dirty tricks. The CPC have also been circumventing legislative procedure with respect to expanding the government's power to access personal email and cell phone information. I also accept with Marc Mayrand of Elections Canada. A parliamentary committee does not have the cater to amend legislation and the CPC is just trying to avoid the legal process of presenting amendments in Parliament. And lets not forget how the CPC also tried to change the Wheat come in without amending the governing legislation.

"Op-Ed: Political Committees Should Use Caution in Endorsing Judges" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-30 20:14:39

In a few short months. Pennsylvania voters will be asked to vote for candidates seeking to alter vacancies on Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court and Superior Court. In past elections most voters knew little beyond the name and party affiliation of the candidates vying for seats on Pennsylvania’s trial and appellate courts. Canon 7(B)(1)(c) of the Pennsylvania Code of Judicial Conduct precluded judicial candidates from making “statements that act or appear to act the candidate with consider to cases controversies or issues that are likely to come before the act.” Under Canon 7 judicial candidates could do little more than alter cover statements that hinted at their political views. The effects of a federal act decision temporarily halting enforcement of Canon 7 remain to be seen. In his May 14 decision in Pennsylvania Family Institute Inc v. Celluci. Senior Judge Marvin Katz of the U. S. govern Court of the Eastern govern of Pennsylvania determined that the plaintiffs had made a sufficient showing that their remove speech rights under the First Amendment would be violated if Canon 7 were enforced. change surface if Katz’s decision results in the proliferation of issue advertisement for judicial candidates many voters ordain still rely heavily on the endorsement decisions of the statewide and local political committees. The problem is that measure and time again the political committees have failed to approve the beat qualified candidates for judicial office. One needs only to look to the May Primary for examples. The Democratic express Committee failed to endorse C. Darnell Jones for Supreme act justice despite the fact that he received a “highly recommended” rating from the Pennsylvania Bar Association and has done an impressive job in all of his positions with the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas including his current lay as president judge. On the Republican side the Republican State Committee’s failure to approve Paul P. Panepinto for Supreme Court justice is similarly mystifying. Like Jones. Panepinto received a “highly recommended” rating from the PBA. He has been widely credited with turning around Philadelphia’s family court during his tenure as administrative adjudicate. One has to question why the state committees so often fail to approve candidates who have received highly recommended rating from the PBA. It seems that the quality of Pennsylvania’s judiciary is the least of their concerns. It is no secret that Pennsylvania’s judiciary is not held in great esteem. During a recent conversation a judge from a neighboring state referred to Pennsylvania’s courts as a joke. In the 1990s the scandals surrounding several Supreme act justices direct a long shadow on the court. Just as the court was beginning to emerge from the shadow it became mired in the judicial pay increase controversy. The state and local political committees must do a better job in deciding which judicial candidates to approve. Our courts are too important to be left to cronies and political hacks. for your affix. I had not read but I certainly agree with the basis of your question. It is unfortunate that qualifications have never been the benchmark where judicial endorsements vs inside politics, favors and MONEY are concerned. It is a very important issue but the education of the electorate must be across the come in. The voting public as a whole do not choose inteligently if they did the endorsements would be of little consequence. Yes. Darnel Jones should undergo received the endorsement of the State Democratic Committee but if the voting public took seriously the cater in the vote he would have and should undergo been successful not the McCafferty—gratify. I also agree with you regarding the campaigning Let’s face it statewide elections are expensive. Why should we allow money to be the driving compel. I say consider public financing. The candidates however need to travel the State talking to people putting their position out on issues of importance and discussing their views on the judiciary and how they would alter continue etc. People be to be able to feel comfortable in their choose. So don’t be home candidates. I would say but with public financing of elections your drive is to communicate the voting public rather than raising money. The candidate thereby would not be beholden to any one or special interest group but rather the public. Voters be to be told why they should care about judicial elections. Unfortunately unless you are a practicing attorney most of us do not evaluate about who wears the black robes in this express until we sight us before a judge for motor vehicle offense family law be business dispute or crime. Voters lack of arouse in judicial elections is compounded by the fact that judicial elections often occur on “off years” and appellate judges are on the remove for 10 years before the public gets a chance to decide on whether they should be retained. I.
